We Have a Dream...

Who are we? We are about 2500-3000 immigrants from the former Soviet Union.
The American people know that refugees from the former Soviet Union are Jewish people. Yes, it was so at the start of immigration, about 25-30 years ago. But even at the beginning, there were many mixed families with a non-Jewish husband or wife.

The first time I had a chance to read the Bible was in Italy, when I stayed with my family for about two months waiting for a visa to the United States. The content of the Bible was in deep contradiction with the science that I had studied in the University back in the Soviet Union.

This question is printed on the cover of 2009 book A Lawyer's Case for God by Jim Jacob. The same millennium-old question was used as the title of an article in the first issue of our newspaper in 1998.

This was the title of a movie that premiered earlier this year, which tells the story of two boys and a girl who were childhood friends in New York. One of the boys became an orthodox rabbi, and the other - a Roman Catholic priest. The girl became a high-powered business executive. The rabbi and priest remained friends in spite of the almost 20 centuries of animosity between believers of their religions. They even founded an interfaith club.
Both men are drawn to the girl from their childhood. The love story among the friends raises problems (an Orthodox rabbi should not marry a gentile, or he must resign as a rabbi, and a Catholic priest can't marry at all).

Church celebrates opening of new wing:
Emphasis placed on social activities

From April 28 through May 6 the congregation of the Valley View Methodist Church celebrated the opening of its 27,000-square-foot Family Life Center wing that cost the congregation $5.75 million. The new Center has a spacious full-size gym, many classrooms and additional office space.

The fate of the old B'Nai Jehuda building

As was announced in the June 20, 2003, issue of The Kansas City Jewish Chronicle, the old building of the Temple B'Nai Jehudah at 69th and Holmes was sold for $5 million with the understanding that it would be demolished to build the University Academy Charter School. Congregation B'Nai Jehudah moved to Overland Park at 124th and Nall last year.

On the same page, it was announced that a new reform congregation, Kol Ami, or Voice of My People, was founded to fill the void in the center of the city. This congregation was founded by a group of families who left Temple B'nai Jehudah when they felt disenfranchised by the executive committee. Details were published by The Kansas City Jewish Chronicle in their October 4, 2002, issue.

Messianic synagogue and its history

Our congregation Or HaOlam is of a type that is called a Messianic Jewish Synagogue. We use that term because we worship the G-d of Israel and Yeshua the Messiah of Israel. Yeshua is the original name of the individual that is now called "Jesus" by many Gentiles. The apparent name change is because the name has gone through several languages. The Greek form of the name had to have an "s" at the end to be masculine in Greek. The "Y" changed into a "J" for similar reasons. When He was on earth, He was Yeshua to his parents, family, and friends.
