English as a Second Language Classes
On September 10, 2000, the Russian - American Club opened its English classes to help immigrants improve their knowledge of the language that will help them get better jobs, improve the quality of their lives, and become better citizens.
There will be four classes lead by the following teachers.
The first class is conducted by Teresa and Daryl MacCarthy, both of whom have spent many years in education, especially Teresa, who taught English as Second Language (ESL) for 17 years in many different countries, including Russia for 3 years.
The second class is conducted by Galan Wagner, teacher from the private Presbyterian school.
The third class is conducted by Tigran Agamalian, our fellow immigrant from the former Soviet Union.
The fouth class is conducted by Cyrus Shadfar. This class differs from above mentioned three classes because it is part of Donnelly College.
"The classes will have between 10 to 15 students," said Cyrus Shadfar, director of the English as a Second Language program at Donnelly College. "We will focus on pronunciation, listening and speaking, using words and idioms which are used daily by native speakers. We will practice asking and answering questions, especially when speaking on the phone. The grammar will be taught through speaking and listening exercises. Each student will be tested and placed in a class according to their level and speed of learning," Shadfar said. "Those who learn faster will be placed together."
At the end of the 16-week term, each student will take the TOEF test. Each student will also be given a certificate of attendance. All classes will be consists of one academic hour.
All classes will be supplemented by a 20-minute discussion class in English and individual conversations with American-born tutors, who will check homework, read books together, and discuss their contents as well as other topics.
