Igor Stravinsky Festival at Lyric Opera of Kansas City

Stravinsky was born June 17, 1882, in Oranienbaum (now Lomonosov), the son of a leading bass singer at the imperial opera house in Saint Petersburg. Although a mediocre student, Stravinsky studied law at the University of St. Petersburg. There he met the son of the Russian composer Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, and his friend's famous father guided Stravinsky's early compositional efforts.

Madama Butterfly at Lyric Opera of Kansas City

The production of Madama Butterfly by the Lyric Opera of Kansas City was more than satisfying. The voice of Marie Platte, who sang the role of Chio-Chio-San (Madama Butterfly) was superior to other leading role singers of the previous season. The Lyric Opera does an excellent job of choosing the appropriate actors for the characters each singer portray.

With book, music and lyrics by Meredith Willson, "The Music Man's" story revolves around Professor Harold Hill, the fascinating fraud, and glib-tongued, fast-footed, woman-chasing traveling salesman from Gary, Indiana.

13-year Old Pianist

Elgar Djangirov, young pianist from the former Soviet Union, featured at the Corporate Woods Jazz Festival Sunday evening June 4, 2000. Elgar was recently showcased on the Grammy Awards. The magic fingers of young pianist were busy during Jazz Festival.

Concert at Santa Fe Tower Apartments

On January 4, 2000, pianist-improvisator Jerry Warner performed a concert for Apartment residents.
These people cannot afford to go out for dinners and concerts too often, and because of this, the ticket price was set only at $1. This concert was a joint project of our newspaper and the Apartment Association.

Russian professional musician Sergey Shapoval performed an educational and still entertaining concert on January 14, 2000, at the Valley View United Methodist Church at 95th & Antioch.

Charitable Dinner at the First Church of the Nazarene

During dinner we presented copies of the December issue of our newspaper to Senior Pastor Jesse Middendorf and Mrs. Gloria Willingham. They were impressed with our mission and activities. Canadian co-authors, actors, and musicians Ted Dykstra and Richard Greenblatt authored the final presentation of the Missouri Repretory Theatre’s 2002-03 season.

2 Pianos has become a theatrical legend not only in Canada, where it debuted in 1996, but has been performed to acclaim on four continents. The score includes selections by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and other classical composers, popular music by Hoagy Carmichael, classic rock and roll made popular by Jerry Lee Lewis, and contemporary music by Billy Joel and Elton John.

The Kansas City Starlight Theatre

The Kansas City Starlight theatre dates back to the 1920’s. Interested in creating a theatre “under the stars,” the Kansas City Federation of Music raised money from the 1926 visit of Queen Marie of Romania to Kansas City to start a city trust for some type of outdoor stage.

In 1930, the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce arranged a week-long performance of the German Grand Opera. Over 55,000 people attended.

After years of debate and consideration, in 1947 the outdoor theatre proposal became a part of the city’s bond issue. While the theatre was low on the city’s list of priorities, the upcoming ceremony celebrating Kansas City’s 100th birthday added urgency. In December 1949, construction began on what we now know to be Starlight Theatre.

Indian Ink by Tom Stoppard

Widely honored as the most brilliant playwright of our time, Tom Stoppard (hailed for his award-winning screenplay Shakespeare In Love as well as his witty and poignant plays Arcadia and Tony-winner The Real Thing) has been rarely performed professionally in Kansas City. Now the Rep will mount the first major Midwest production of his unique play Indian Ink. Stoppard spent an important part of his childhood in India and this play is rich in feelings; Indian Ink is also an original, witty and surprising triumph of invention.
